Join me on my journey!
My sailing adventure came about out of necessity. My friend and I were
in a 13 foot row boat with a 9.9 horsepower outboard. We were on the
Pt. Pleasant side of the Manasquan River, just opposite of Fisherman’s Cove when the prop hit something and broke the shearing pin giving us no power to move! It was early evening with the wind blowing from the south east. We were stuck and the tide was going out. Not wanting to go out the inlet, we found a plastic cover that was in the boat for a makeshift sail. We decided to hold it up and although we really couldn‘t steer the boat, the wind was just strong enough coming from the right direction to push us across the channel to allow us to reach the beach at Fisherman’s Cove. We both thought that was pretty cool, Wind Power!
Back to the story…not long afterwards, a fisherman dropped anchor within shouting distance to the beach. We asked him for a tow. He did one
better. He let out more anchor line and got closer to the beach.
The fisherman couldn’t be any nicer. He had some tools and parts that he carried in his boat and took a look at our little motor. Although he didn’t
have the right size pin, he had a nail that would fit where the pin would go.
Wallah, he fixed it for us! All he asked of my friend and I was to pay it forward. “If someone needs help, try to help them!” he said.
With that we jumped back in the boat, pulled up the anchor and away we went… waving back to the fisherman who fixed our problem.
Well l never forgot how the wind helped me that day…
Of course, had the wind been too strong it might not have
worked. Much like surfing, you have to respect the ocean and the winds.
If you do, you can have a blast with Mother Nature. That’s why I go sailing. It‘s just the feeling of freedom and using Mother Nature to push you to your destination. Now how cool is that!
That’s why I charter, so others can enjoy it too!!
Now you know how I got my interest in sailing, and
why I want to share it with others.
So here we are, located at the best part of Barnegat Bay.
The reason being is that although the bay is pretty big,
there are many large areas of it that are very shallow where you really cannot sail or use a power boat. However, at Forked River we are smack in the middle of the deeper parts of Barnegat Bay, giving us a wide sailing area. By the way, deep is around 11 feet in the middle of the bay.

What to expect….. We will meet at the docks of the Captain’s Inn Tiki Bar.
After boarding the sailboat, it’s time to get under way and head out the
Forked River for a short run to Barnegat Bay. Shortly afterward, the plan is to raise the sails
and turn off the engine. Then the magic of sailing takes hold! With the engine sound gone and the wind pushing on the sails, a feeling of relief will fall upon you as you leave the hustle bustle world behind! As the adventure unfolds, you are more than welcome to help sail or feel free to just relax…… the choice is all yours!
